Sketching

The first lesson in sketching aimed to develop the children's confidence in bringing their pencils to the page without fear of making mistakes. The lesson was broken down into five stages aimed to gradually build their confidence.

As a quick starter we 'climbed' into the picture of the elephant and role played what we might hear, see and feel. This helped the children to engage with the picture and to imagine beyond what they could see. The children then drew the picture in the air with their fingers to help them think about the shapes and details within the picture.

The children then divided their page into four sections and were asked to wait for instructions for each section:

1. The first section (top left) the children were asked to draw the elephant in one minute.

2. The second section (top right) the children were asked to draw the elephant without taking their pencil of the page.

3. The third section (bottom left) the children were asked to draw the elephant without looking at their page.

4. The fourth section (bottom right) the children were asked to draw the elephant without looking at the picture of the elephant.
